How many of you reading this drink Alcohol on a daily basis? I’d say most people, it has become the norm to come home from work and have a glass of wine, or even a bottle, and it has even become as acceptable as eating or breathing!
Socially, most of us drink alcohol; it relaxes us, puts us in good spirit and gives us energy. But as we all know it is not good for us. It is addictive and can cause many harmful effects on the body.
But did you know that alcohol actually reduces our body’s ability to burn fat? Alcohol reduces your body’s ability to burn fat by up to over 20%. The reason this happens is that when we consume alcohol it is the first fuel the body will burn. Unlike carbohydrates, proteins and fats, alcohol does not have any nutrients and we are therefore consuming ‘empty calories’. So when we eat food with alcohol, the body will burn the calories you consume from the alcohol, thus the food we eat is stored as fat.
And how many of you end up eating more after a session on the alcohol? Well that causes you to pile on the pounds as much as the alcohol!
When I design a healthy eating plan for my clients, I ask them to try to stay clear of alcohol for at least 4-8 weeks. Number one, because it is good for you to have a detox, and secondly because whenever we drink alcohol it is the first fuel we burn, as I mentioned. Thus whilst that is going on your body will not burn fat. If my clients ‘crack’, I advise them to drink vodka, or gin with slimline tonic, as wine, and beer especially, have much more calories.
So if you want that perfect body for summer, give the drink a break, or do not eat whilst you drink, or have the lowest calorie alcoholic drink you can. But not drinking alcohol at all would be the sensible option!
